COURT ETIQUETTE

Court Etiquette in Tennis

In tennis, it is extremely important to be courteous towards our partner, our adversaries and the players on the adjacent courts. Here is a list of major court etiquette principles in tennis.

1) Never walk on a court in the middle of a point. Wait until the point is finished and only then can you walk behind the baseline to get to your court. Always enter by the gate closest to your assigned court.

2) Avoid talking or yelling at a player during play. As a spectator, do not talk to a player involved in a match. Wait till the end of the match.

3) If a ball from an adjacent court rolls inside your court, wait until the point on the court next to you is finished before returning the ball to one of the players. If the ball disturbs play on your court, you can play a let and return the ball to the adjacent court.

4) Move the balls on your side of the net away from your court before your opponent begins to serve.

5) If your opponent serves up a fault, do not retrieve the ball before the second serve. Wait till the point is over before returning the ball. In addition, do not return a first serve when it is clearly out.

6) Avoid conversations. It can annoy your opponent and the players on the adjacent courts.

7) The player is responsible for the line calls on his side of the net. It is always preferable to call a ball "in" that is "out" then to call a ball "out" when the ball is inside the lines. The correct call is good even if the ball catches the outside of the line. When in doubt, call it "in".

8) Avoid misunderstandings and call every serve. If you and your opponent can not agree on the mark, the final decision falls unto the player who was on the side of the net of the close call.

9) When the match is over, thank your partner and your opponents whether you win or lose. Always shake your partner and your opponents’ hands.
