CLUB HISTORY

A Brief History of the Orleans Tennis Club

The Orleans Tennis Club was founded 25 years ago by an enthusiastic group of young tennis players and their families.  They wanted the opportunity to exercise their passion for tennis in a convenient, quality facility which could also provide a safe location for their children to learn and enjoy the game.  Over the years, the club has been situated in a number of locations including a site on St.Joseph Blvd. and at the bottom of St.Pierre near the baseball diamond. It’s modern history began in 1977, when Pauline Rainville, Denis Roy, and Jean-Louis Chamberlain joined with the Orleans Recreation Association to procure a Wintario grant and acquire land on which the club is currently located. Four new courts were built and the courts were inaugurated with the new Club’s first tournament in 1978.  In 1979, the first clubhouse was purchased and situated in a trailer at the back of the courts.  A number of improvements to lighting and the clubhouse were made over the years.  Spearheaded by Jim Corneil, Vic Clarke and Chuck Orifici in collaboration with the city of Gloucester, the Orleans Tennis Club facility was completed in 1991, with the construction of the current clubhouse building.
